Barry
Estabrook originally opened his book with an experience he had while behind a
truck on the road. He explains how he saw “what seemed to be green Granny Smith
apples”. This was until he got closer and realized the green “Granny Smith
apples” were really green tomatoes that, despite having fallen ten feet out of
a truck going sixty, had hardly any damage done to them when a fall of that
kind should have had the fruits splattered. This then addresses the first of
the cost differences that organic farmers have over the tomato producers.
According to Google maps a Drive from Moscow, Idaho to Florida, where most of
the books tomato producers were mentioned, is two thousand eight hundred ninety
four miles away. Whereas locally grown could range from six hundred to fifty
miles away. That being said the closer the farm the less traveling would mean
there would be less of a necessary transportation budget required. Though when
traveling farther the other buisnesses do have a higher offer of amount of
tomatoes to sell over organic.
