Article Review Assignment: Nope not too many men in Alaska
On CNN, February 17, 2014, spoke on the recent hot topic relating to the Rape rate in Alaska. Before the show there were emails and tweets set in on reasons why people believe that Alaska has the highest rape case and people wanted to blame it on the fact that Alaska currently has the highest ratio for its populations. Many people that sent in their opinions were saying they thought the ratio was ten to one, or twelve to one as far as men to women went. Though in reality there are about one hundred seven men to every one hundred women. With the estimated numbers being 380 thousand and women at about 355 thousand, meaning that there is only about 25 thousand more men than women in Alaska. While these numbers are drastically different the article addresses the question on whether or not the number has any impact on the number of raps that occur in Alaska.
Country wide the article said that women make up 50.8% of the national population. Tough even if there is more men the numbers can’t explain the rape rate. The current rape rate in Alaska is about three times the national average. However Alaska is being labels as dangerous for women, with long dark winters, alcohol abuse, as well as history of violence and trama in the culture. While the men to woman ratio might affect relationships it’s not quiete big enough to count for such a change between the national average and the sates average. It’s estimated that with these numbers 37% of the women in Alaska are victims of sexual violence, and the six of every ten women are victims to sexual and/or intimate partner violence, which also includes any threats of violence made. The governor of Alaska told CNN that the rape rate could best be described as an epidemic for the state.
Most people now though are more fascinated with the number ration between men and women then they are with the violence that they need to start focusing more on ending the violence than anything else.
As far as a solution for the problem goes it really seems that there is not a lot you can do. Also considering the rate America has for violence and another option is that perhaps Alaska’s rape rate is so high because more people are willing to report their rapes then they are in America, that or perhaps then the fact Alaska is so spread out and wilderness filled causing a sort of lack of closeness in some communities which could make it more dangerous for women.
